Check temperature before use! It can get seriously HOT!

Bought this for my wife to help her with arthritis and dry skin. I chose this particular unit because it has an adjustable thermostat and not just two separate settings like most units. The device melts the wax very quickly and that's because it gets CRAZY HOT! It says to melt the wax with the thermostat on (labeled 70, equals 158 degrees Fahrenheit on the instrument), so I did. I put 4 packs of wax in the unit, set it on high power and let it sit for a couple of hours. When I checked the temperature of the wax with an infrared thermometer, it read 188 degrees! It's hot enough to burn your skin! I gave it 3 stars for heating just because it heats so much more than advertised! So, as suggested in the brochure, I turned the thermostat down to 55 to cool the wax to a usable temperature (131 degrees Fahrenheit) and let it sit for a while. This lowered the temperature to a point where the wax on the surface solidified. So I gradually increased it to the point where the machine was just liquid wax, which ended up being between 128 and 138 degrees (a little under 60 on the machine), which was a comfortable temperature. Wax. The device is quite small, so if you have big feet like me, forget it. It's about 10 inches long and about 8 inches wide. Good for the hands, but hardly suitable for the legs. The wax that it comes with is definitely not a high quality wax so I would recommend if you want that particular device to buy the device without any accessories and buy some quality wax separately. It came with slim plastic handbags and a set of fabric handbags and a foot set, but hopefully you have small feet. Also included were popsicle sticks and a brush that my wife uses to wax her knees and ankles. I'd say this is a good device for beginners, but I wouldn't recommend using it without an infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature of the wax. They're pretty cheap, so they're $15 (Harbor Freight Tools) so you don't burn your hands testing the wax. The description says that the device heats up to a maximum of 158 degrees, but the wax definitely heats up much higher. I don't know if it would get much hotter if I let it sit longer, but close to 190 degrees can seriously burn you! The good thing is that it melts the wax very quickly, but if you're not careful you can burn yourself. And if you are looking for instructions for use for paraffin wax, you will look in vain for the short brochure that came with the device. It does not provide any instructions on how to use the device other than "Put wax in the device, plug it in and turn on the device. Use the brush to apply the wax to the skin." It's written in poorly translated English, so you too will be scratching your head after reading some of it. But no real instructions on how to use the device, the wax or the included accessories. This is a good heating pad if you want a smaller, portable device that melts the wax quickly, but you better have a thermometer to check the temperature of the wax! Would I recommend this device? Probably nothing for those who don't care about safety.I gave it 4 stars because it has an adjustable thermostat, melts wax quickly when you're in a hurry and is portable. It's probably not a good device if you're after a device looking to dip your feet in, or if you're absent-minded and might forget to check the temperature of the wax before you put your hand plug in!
