These are so thick that really you have two feasible options for wearing these; either you wear them at home without shoes or you wear them with looser boots. They are very warm socks, but I'm not sure how much is just that they are thick and how much is their "insulation". To me, these are best for walking around your house at night, because they aren't quite enough to keep your feet warm while you are shoveling snow. Their warmth is more of a "warm and cozy" and not a "sub-zero February snow storm".
