UPDATE: I've had this item for 4 months now and it still smells awful. The outside smell is not that bad as it is weathered. But the inside of the ottoman stinks! Despite the fact that I aired it for a couple of days by removing the lid, it smells. Once the lid closes, the smell builds up again. I can't put anything in it because it stinks. I started putting my laptop in it because I figured the laptop wouldn't absorb the smell that well. Well, now my laptop stinks horribly too. I'm changing my rating from 3 stars to 1 star because I can't save anything. It's completely useless to me as I bought it mainly for storage. Thin cardboard so I can't use it as a bench. I'm also concerned that these strong chemicals are toxic. The smell is too strong, it can't be sure. ORIGINAL: Oh my god, that thing stinks! The smell is terrible! Not only is it a strong chemical smell that lingered for weeks, but it's also treated with flame retardants, which explains the smell. Flame retardants are toxic! I've had it since late April and it still smells when the lid is opened but it's definitely shrunk. I still won't put anything in it until the smell goes away.
