Ignore the other reviewer who said you can use them straight out without a license: they are 3 watt radios with a detachable antenna so you can get a FRS/GMRS Must purchase license ($70, for 10 years). It's easy online, so just do it and you're done. Then you have nothing to fear at all. Also, it's best to (re)program them with CHIRP so they're road legal in the US. Plus awesome (x10) radios for the price! Great range and ease of use. I take them on hikes and they work perfectly. A+
