Review on Cooler Master CK550 V2 Gaming Mechanical Keyboard Blue Switch With RGB Backlighting by Andy Jolley

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Linux-friendly brown Switch keyboard

This is my second mechanical keyboard (at least in modern times) and it's a winner. While I miss the detachable cable from another CM keyboard I bought, this keyboard feels just right for me. The flat red switches on the other keyboard were too soft, and I kept double-clicking the bottom row keys. However, this CK 550 always reproduces exactly what my fingers are typing. (Still doesn't prevent typos, unfortunately, but it's not a hardware issue.) The backlighting is nice -- the keycaps are easy to read in total darkness, and I can change the color to suit my mood. No software is required to change the colors, so it's extremely Linux-friendly. I haven't tried any of the Linux software packages to control such a keyboard, so I can't comment on that. Built-in function key support for media and screen brightness works driverless on Linux. It's a bit louder than my trusty old Saitek keyboard, but I've never been able to read those keys in the dark, so the noise is tolerable. Also, the included key puller allowed me to switch the modifier keycaps to the configuration I actually use. I assume this can also remap the keyboard to AZERTY, Colemak, or Dvorak layouts (or any other Latin-based layout). many other mechanical options. I might try one with full-size red keys someday to see if I like quieter keys if they aren't so short, but I don't feel the need to spend that money right now.

Pros
  • RGB backlighting: LEDs per key with multiple lighting modes and effects to highlight all your dominant kill streaks
Cons
  • Fade out
