Review on Mazur Instruments PRM 9000 Radiation Contamination by John Miller

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The only thing that would be nice would be the presence of some sort of protective case.

This is a well built instrument that works well. It is priced the same as SE International and International Medcom devices based on the same pancake sensor, but offers a more functional interface. The unit had a Duracell Procell alkaline battery installed which I replaced with an Energizer lithium battery to avoid alkaline battery leakage problems. Another review mentioned a nearby vertical board that could be damaged when changing the battery, but I didn't notice such a board on mine. I suspect there are different hardware versions of the PRM-9000. The battery is held in place by a metal clip that worked well for alkaline batteries but was a little tight for lithium batteries. I installed the lithium carefully not to damage the battery, holder or circuit board. The extra data cable is a bit more expensive and I haven't bought it yet as I don't need it. The only thing that would be nice would be some sort of safety boot similar to the SE International/International Medcom ones. The power connector is an odd size, but I have an old Radio Shack universal adapter with the correct tip size.

Pros
  • Radiation scanning and detection of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM)
Cons
  • weak
