I don't use this for compost but for cat litter. I only have one cat, but he quickly throws the kitty litter away, so in the past putting the litter in the bin because of the smell very often meant taking the garbage out. The smell doesn't permeate this bin that much, which means I only have to take the bin out once a week at most! There are small holes in the top of the container so the smell can still come out that way, but if you don't want that you can probably just tape the holes over. The container itself doesn't seem to pick up the smell of kitty litter, it didn't smell at all so that was good. My trash can also used to smell a lot like cat poop and was difficult to clean every time. This container is also small enough to be easily cleaned with disinfectants after removing the litter box. I also like how the lid can be adjusted to be either fully open or half open. It snaps securely into place and has a handle that comes in handy if you need to move it! Overall I am very happy I made this purchase as it makes my life so much easier and only wish I had received a separate container sooner!
