Sticky and superficial, more like paint than dye

I purchased this to recolor a black leather weekender bag that had started to fade. While this stuff made it look slightly better, it pretty much ruined the leather.I didn't necessarily want to recolor the entire bag, just the parts that were faded, but after doing a test I noticed that this balm was significantly "blacker" than the original, so I would have to do the whole bag if I wanted it to look consistent. The first thing I did was clean the leather and let it dry. Then I gradually applied a small amount of balm, just enough to barely cover the leather, using the included sponge and gloves. The application went easy without steaks and I let it dry overnight, but I immediately noticed that the surface was tacky. There was one small portion where I has over applied some of the balm and so I peeled off the excess and that's when I noticed that this is essentially a paint, not any sort of dye that seeps into the leather, more like a plastic/rubber film that sits on top of it. That stickiness is what this stuff is and it's probably not going away. The leather now has a rubbery texture to it and when the leather handles sit on the bag for a few minutes, you can hear them "unstick" when you pick them back up. Pretty poor quality product if you ask me.I tried applying a leather conditioner in the hopes that maybe that would moisturize the leather and make it less sticky, but now this gunk prevents the leather from absorbing any of the conditioner and it just sits on top of it.I then decided to wipe off the excess conditioner and used some leather cleaner to do so - well, the rag came back black, which means that this paint is so delicate that it wipes right off with a little bit of cleaner. I honestly can't imagine how anyone would want to wear a jacket after it's had this rubbed all over with this stuff. Seems like the color would transfer over to whatever it comes into contact with. I can really only see this stuff being useful on boots since most boots already mark up surfaces so it's not like that really limits their usefulness. But luggage, clothing, furniture? Seems like a terrible idea.Is there something special about my leather bag, or do other reviewers just have really low standards? Not sure, but I wouldn't recommend using this on any high quality item that you don't want to ruin.

Pros
  • Suitable for all types of leather
Cons
  • May not be suitable for use on leather with a lot of creases or wrinkles
