Relief Knowing My Dog Is Safe

I bought the size Large for my 2 year old 75 lb German Shepherd. It fits great and I'm so happy to know it's safer on the boat. He doesn't like to swim and panics. To help him I take the risk that he will drown me or at least scratch and hurt me. I hope he gets better in the water over time and if not that's okay too. At least for now, for my safety and his, the situation is better under control. 15 years ago I bought my first Ruffwear dog life jacket in a small size for my 30 lb terrier. She's thin and tall, so I had to tighten the adjustable straps all the way to get her to fit. She wears it while swimming in the sea and lakes. It's great to grab the handle and easily lift it out of the water, into the canoe or boat, onto the dock, or into my arms. I have also used the small size for my 30lb boston terrier who sinks really deep when he first jumps in the water. Bostonians are a bulldog mix, meaning they have short, dense bones and often can't swim enough to swim on their own. Since he was smaller and larger than a terrier, I adjusted the straps to make the jacket slightly larger for him. Thinking the water lilies are hard ground, he jumps out of the boat, thinking he can run wild in the forest. Luckily I can grab the handle and bring him back on board when he recovers from the shock of his mistake. A warning is that if you have a leash on a vest instead of a regular dog collar, the dog can pull the jacket back, but that requires you and the dog to pull each other very hard, and that rarely happens. All of my dogs have found the jackets comfortable and run and play in them as usual.
