This may sound silly, but I bought this to light up my face during Zoom meetings. My office is lit by a large sliding glass door, and even with the blinds closed, a lot of light comes in, making my face invisible. I agree, but my boss "likes to see our faces," so it seemed like a great solution. Without the light I look like an anonymous source revealing in a documentary. With him I am clearly enlightened. Haven't used it to take photos with my phone yet, but I have a larger phone (Pixel 2XL) and it fits both horizontally and vertically. I am also trying to get into food photography and would like to use it for that as well.
