Hanging balls do not come loose. The little handle you see is made out of two pieces of plastic screwed together like chain clasps. The strings are stretchy so they tug and bounce the balls which was really fun for a minute. But somehow our cat had a rope wrapped around her tail and when she jumped down she pulled herself up and she was hanging there on top of the tower with the rope wrapped around her tail screaming. The elastic cord tightened but didn't snap. This happened within 5 minutes after we set it up. I quickly clipped this toy and other than that they seem to love it. I shudder to think what could happen to a very small kitten. I couldn't figure out how to contact the manufacturer so I had a chat online with a Revain representative and they said they would refund us and pass on my review.
