Plastic clips need to be covered with round cylinders at the corners of the shelves, this is not clear in the instructions. I saw several photos of plastic clamps for cylinders. As the clips didn't go in easily I used a hammer to hit the corner of the shelves (very gently) until the cylinders closed the clips, once you do that it becomes very strong and holds up very well. It looks like he has a lot of weight. Please see photos of a similar assembly and how the clamps fit into the cylinders.
