An Honest Review of Thermal Transfers

First of all, I'm an amateur, not a professional t-shirt maker, but these aren't my first t-shirts. I was optimistic when I decided to try this HTV even though there are some bad reviews about this product. The package arrived quickly but I was confused because it came in this tiny rectangular box. I did not believe that the dimensions correspond to those given. Unfortunately it's not 10 inches wide, just shy but not by much. Was it 5 feet long? I was able to create 5 images that were 11 inches long leaving a good chunk of around 4-5 inches (x > 10 inches) so I'd say it was just under, if not exactly 5, overall foot was. I panicked when the HTV detached from the substrate, but I was able to gently place it back onto the substrate. There was a slight bubbling, which made me nervous. I placed my first measured and cut piece on a green (standard) chart mat. This was my first time using a green mat and I'm not used to how sticky it is. When I removed the vinyl to smooth it out, it was wrinkled and creased and I was certain this piece was ruined. I continued to work on it, carefully aligning it along the sidelines. Once I lowered it where I wanted it, I started smoothing out the bubbles with my fingers. With light pressure and just my hand, I was able to smooth out any wrinkles, creases, and bubbles. phew The backing was almost invisible on the mat and really stuck. You don't need to use tape to hold it. I wonder how it will hold up given the bubbles I just smoothed out. Spring. I'll take care of that later. Ready to cut. I have a Cricut Explore Air 2. Based on previous reviews, I decided to cut with my almost new blade in GLITTER IRON-ON HIGH PRESSURE mode. I wasn't sure how to do this, but it's easy enough to figure out by reading your Cricut's screen. Can be cut wonderfully with no problems. Or so it seemed. Now for the weeding. My least favorite part, especially given the tiny letters and cursive I chose for the back of my shirt. I wasn't sure I could weed it at all. But I thought it was a test pattern, so keep trying until it's done or broken. So far, so good. This HTV weed is just a dream! I don't really know why there are negative reviews unless this seller changed sellers but I just deleted my piece and the other 4 large pictures. I think I weeded them all in under an hour. And I stopped halfway to get something to eat. I started in the top left corner and worked my way diagonally down to the bottom right corner. I worked slowly because I'd been reading about breaks, sometimes I had to stop pulling in one direction and change pressure to release the intersection, but I barely used my weeding tool to remove most of the excess vinyl and when there was a bang. Letters like e, o and p, they literally jumped out. The easiest weeding job. Serious. What are the negative reviews? I will say that I think the crazy grip of my standard grip green carpet made the weeding much easier. I weeded it on the mat and then took the picture off the mat. Doesn't bubble or crackle. I was able to smooth out all the climbs easily. So the last step. Iron them. I poured all the water out of my iron because I know you shouldn't have steam with your HTV. The iron is set to the highest temperature. I'm starting as I have other projects; Firm pressure back and forth on both sides for 30 seconds. I've done this a few times and the stuff just didn't stick! More time with more pressure. I finally got it to stick, but actually tapped it gently without a towel before pulling on the backing. I slapped him front and back again with a thin kitchen towel. Everything seems to be glued well. I am considering repeating this later today. The material is incredibly shiny and beautiful. Doesn't stretch. If you use this product and set up your device as recommended by others, you should have no problems with this product. This is not a five minute project. You have to be patient, eat well and don't let anyone distract you, at least the first time. As I said at the beginning this was a test shirt as I am making 13 for a family reunion. After working with this product and 3 different images I created (images are approximately 9" x 11" but not solid see photo) I decided to order 4 more rolls of this product, to complete the project. There are some tricks to using this product, but I believe the reviews here have solved all sorts of problems that users might have had when they first read the reviews! It would be nice to get some instructions with this pack, but HTV is similar in every way, so I think that's why it's not included. Also, I believe all HTV/Craft vinyl records have a learning curve, so sometimes you just have to learn how to walk. I hope this review has been helpful to you. Much luck!
