If you need to put a cup on something and there is no space for a table, that's fine. My rocking chairs have swollen armrests and the table folds around them to form a solid surface, but any movement against the armrest is naturally transmitted to the table. In general, if you don't have space, it's better than holding a cup of coffee or putting it on the floor.
