I've tried to get the shadows as close as possible to show that they aren't thin at all. For example, I don't understand the reviewer who said the shades are like paper?! Not the case at all. They have a fairly typical hue density. Well done. The company emailed ahead of time with a PDF copy of the instructions and how to release the lever when we first took it out of the box. It's relatively hard because it has to be. You don't want things to bounce off you when you want to read. We bought 3 way LED daytime running lights from Home Depot which are said to last 13 years. You may need more warm light than a reading lamp. The swivel arms work very well. Having sconces is far better than taking up space on a bedside table. According to my husband they were easy to install once he went through the instructions a few times and looked at the mount. In other words, at first it was not clear how to get out of the box. He should have thought about it. In the photos we glued the spot where the headboard was attached to the wall. We had to seriously think about where the lamps would be in relation to the bedside table and headboard. In the end we decided to center the lamps over the bedside tables, align the top of the rectangular panel with the top line of the headboard, and position them 1 1/2 inches from either side of the headboard. They look beautiful and symmetrical. They are well put together including the shades. We are very happy with these elegant lamps.
