I was looking for a compact camera in the $200 range that would take sharp pictures with good image stabilization. My old Canon Powershot SD750 (which I was very happy with) had recently died and needed a replacement. I tried 5 different cameras and the picture quality was terrible on all of them: 1. Panasonic DMC-FH25A2. Nikon Coolpix S62003. Canon Powershot SX230HS4. Canon PowerShot SD980IS5. Canon PowerShot Elph 100 HS All sent back. I finally found the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX7V and I'm thrilled. I never thought a Sony camera would outperform comparable Nikon and Canon (WHAT has happened to Canon in the last few years?) models, but the difference is absolutely night and day. Pros: Image stabilization is excellent, even when chasing moving kids. The autofocus response time is very good (this has always annoyed me with some of my previous Canon cameras). The zoom is crystal clear. Most importantly, the images look beautiful, vibrant and sharp even when using the intelligent auto mode. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use. Cons: There is a delay between pressing the video capture button and actually starting recording (a few seconds). Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Also, the PC interface is a bit clunky. I had to install the Sony software that came with the camera to be able to capture video from the camera. The standard Windows wizard will not do this. Again, no big deal. Conclusion: Test the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX7V. You will not be disappointed.
