These are corrugated heat resistant silicone pads. The bellows helps lift a hot object, such as a pot or pan, out of full contact with a protected surface, such as a countertop. However, it transfers heat to that surface over time so these are more of a short-term than long-term solution to keeping heat off a surface, but they work quite well for short periods of time. Those same shafts make them a little tricky to clean easily if spills occur, as you'll have to work at removing them once those grooves are out, but they'll be clean. I use it when cooking in a fryer (with an oven door, not a drawer) to prevent leftover food from falling into the hinge area of the drawer before placing it on the rack. For this purpose, they work great. I also think they can be washed in the dishwasher.
