Review on πŸ“Ί Versatile Mattel Juice Personal Media Player: Enjoy Portable Audio & Video Anywhere! by Carlos Massey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A very versatile device for the money.

I've been watching this toy for a while and make no mistake it's a toy and not a high end AV component but like I said I've read a lot of bad things about Juicebox on here and I have to say i disagree with most of the bad reviews. Firstly I agree, at the moment there seems to be a shortage of cassettes available and the ability to play mp3 is an additional cost and should probably come with the base unit. What I disagree with is that everyone says the picture/video quality is bad, we also have the Gameboy Advance and the video is at least as good if not better and the screen is a bit bigger too. I just hope everyone has removed the protective plastic film. I also bought an MP3 kit and I have to say that the MP3 player is pretty good. While you can't rely on the internal speaker for good headphone sound quality, it sounds pretty good. It contains as many songs as you can fit on an SD card and accepts a card up to 512MB. So that's quite a lot of songs, 146 at 3.5MB each. So I don't know what the reviewers are complaining about when they say there aren't very many songs, even with the 32 meg card that came with you should get about 9 songs on it and you can use other SD cards and store as many songs as you want, it's not an iPod, but it doesn't cost $300 either. The menus are easy to use and informative and my 7 year old has no problem navigating them and has an added photo browsing feature that even an iPod could not do until recently. I'm considering buying another for my own use, to take with me on business trips so not only do I have the music I want to listen to, but I can watch a slideshow of photos from home to stave off the blues. Time will tell in terms of durability and construction but the device appears to be well built apart from the fold down security door covering the screen which got caught on something and broke otherwise I don't see any other obvious issues. Some have complained about its light weight, but I think that's a positive for both the player and the cartridges, because you don't want a portable player to be heavy and bulky, do you? for children as a multifunction device and for adults as an MP3 player and image viewer. The only real downside I see is the presence of children's cassette tapes, but as we bought it primarily for an MP3 player, the video portion wasn't a huge issue. If you want portable video, buy a portable DVD player, video is better (if you have a player with a good screen), and of course the choice of DVDs is almost limitless.
