I first bought a dust pan/holder/hand broom/frying pan set. This strainer/scoop was fine, but I had to move all the junk from side to side to thoroughly clean the box. He also broke up litter (urine) that was stuck together on the floor so that the pieces were too small to scoop up with a shovel. Because of this, the tray smelled more than we would like. This scoop also had holes that were too small for my (wheat) litter. In the end the handle broke off and that was it. I phased it out and replaced it with a Petsmart unit. The new bucket had a rounded edge. Scary to scratch the bottom of the box. It was more expensive than that shovel. This is probably good for pens that stick together instantly (like an arm and hammer), but not so good for pens that are a bit slower to react. I used this spoon twice and thought "this is awful, I need to try another spoon." It couldn't pick up most of the debris off the ground. (Sorry kitty, I'm sure it was a very bad smell for you.) Then I tried this spoon. IDEAL for wheat bedding. The holes are slightly larger than the first spoon so I can sift MUCH faster. It doesn't break pancakes at the bottom of the box, covers more area than the first scoop, and has holes on the sides. This allows me to insert the scoop, lift and hold, toss the debris into the bag and move forward, lift and hold, etc. until the tray is cleaned. I no longer have to make a separate garbage pile in a different part of the box. (The first dustpan couldn't handle dirt more than 2 inches thick, otherwise it would just get stuck and the dirt wouldn't fall through.) Finally, this dustpan is nice and strong, with a handle that's not too long. broke, would love to buy another one :) My time spent with the tray is HALF the time I spent with the first spoon and it picks up more (pancakes) than both spoons.
