Many people say that these headphones don't have very good bass. No, your mixes don't have good bass because if I'm looking at strong Pink Floyd or Dr. Listening to Dre or Soundgarder records, there is a lot of bass. I've listened to how great mixes sound in these headphones and I got back to my own work and said okay something needs to change so oddly enough these headphones are actually educational. They were recommended to me by a consultant from a major national chain and I bought a second pair because they mix so well. If you can build bass/kick/guitar/snare cymbal and vox into good tracks at strong but not excessive volume in these headphones, your mix could be spot on and they have a way of teaching you how to equalize anything including a clean sound. Pan. Mixing for me was a long odyssey of hacking until I found guides and then going back and forth for a few years, helping them create solid mixes that revealed what I really have, not what I'd like to have. Sometimes I think something sounds great and I was wrong, but these headphones don't make me something that's not there. Sometimes these headphones also tell me that the mix or song is boring and needs more work. They don't improve what isn't there. They accurately reproduce effects like reverb, delay, chorus, phaser. I'm not saying there aren't better headphones out there, but they don't improve your mix that much, making it sound completely different on other better devices. If you want to drive something deep into the red and blow out the low end, buy other headphones that will make that sound artificially good. I'm only missing the last star because at five times the price there has to be something better, but don't be sure if there is just by buying the most expensive dollar. AKG has always been a reliable company for me. I also think their aesthetic is timeless, as this design has been around for quite some time, stretching back to the true audiophile glory days, although I can't vouch for what's actually in current builds, as I'm far from a technical one am an engineer. However, the design looks simple yet professional and always useful. They say don't mix with headphones but with studio monitors, but they let you do a lot when/where you can't use monitors and actually provide another reference point. to compare your monitor mixes. Once you get used to mixing with them, it seems like you'll find a workflow you can count on. They are also comfortable for long periods of time without my noticing. Skin can get a little damp but does not absorb like foamier phones or degrade like most headphone materials or fall apart on the ear surfaces or headband for over 5-6 years. They provide secure protection from the outside world without pinching your head or ears. I'm hoping to buy some of AKG's fancier models just as artwork, but I'm afraid that pricier headphones might not render better final mixes, but I think I'll find out.
