After a second attempt at programming with the same result (the car only recognizes the fob when it is in the slot), I remembered that I had seen an instructional video on YouTube that said the car would recognize the fob in the slot, even if that were the case his battery was dead. , smart, at least you're not stranded when the battery dies, there should be a message somewhere telling you that. Anyway, I had another Traverse remote with the same battery, changed the batteries and voila. Just came with a dead battery. Update: I was just assuming the remote only worked as it should because the buttons work, but the car still only starts with the key fob in the slot.
