The message 'cartridge communication error' is displayed on the printer. "You may be using a counterfeit or non-Canon cartridge" so no message is sent when ink is low. Something also happened to the yellow cartridge about a month after it was installed - and the printer isn't used that much. Several printed pages came out completely yellowed. So we gritted our teeth and reordered, paying a much higher price for genuine Canon toner cartridges. We have since replaced the yellow with Canon toner and have other colors available if needed. I don't normally stick to brands but as this is a printer for our small office I wanted to make sure the print quality was the best so I will be using Canon toner cartridges from now on even if they are overpriced.
