The hand pump that starts the siphon requires some strength. It must be pumped at a high enough rate for the siphon to fill and start. You can pump too slowly for the siphon to not kick in, but the unit will still pump liquid. The siphon hose has a sufficient volume, so you need to learn to open the valve and stop the siphon, otherwise there may be an overflow. The operation of the valve also requires some attention, making sure it is fully closed by opening it quickly enough. I'm a big fan of classic devices that don't use batteries and that's a good idea.
