We decided on this kit because we didn't want to mount it on a plastered wall and we might have to deal with chimney stones. Even if it were a bust, any patched holes in the mantel would not show, but holes in the wall would need careful patching, sanding, and painting. Our mantel was only 8 inches deep while the other mantels were 10-14 inches deep. We ordered a universal mounting kit as suggested by another reviewer, but didn't need it. The brackets allow for height adjustment during assembly, which I didn't realize before purchasing. Expect to have to make an adjustment or two to maintain your TV level. I thought it would be unreliable, but a 55-inch TV weighs less than you think at just under 50 pounds.
