It's just that the design is like that because they haven't thought of another solution yet. It is true that with consistent use once a year you will need to clean and lubricate, but I don't see how this might be a problem. Before that, I used trimmers made by Remington. Ten years ago, they were practically worthless; today, they offer significant cost savings across the board; even the battery has been upgraded to a more cost-effective model.
