I bought this because it will stand up to the weather (I have it in a screened room in Florida that is exposed to rain, wind, etc.). Because it rains almost every day in summer. It flies through shelters, makes 90-degree turns even a UFO would be proud of, and climbs up every level with ease. If you use the configuration shown in the product description instead of inventing your own, the device will be stable. Without that protruding cube, tipping over is possible because while it's structurally strong, it's also very light and has a high center of gravity. One nice thing about it is that it's not affected by rain coming through my screens. The other scratching post I have (which I have great respect for) had to be placed away from the screen so the rain wouldn't ruin it. Since my kitty liked to sit by the privacy screen, I always had to be ready to move the old tree if it started to rain, or in anticipation of rain if I planned to be away for a while. This solves this problem and the kitten uses the old tree to take a nap when it rains. For the price this turned out to be one of the cheapest cat items I've bought and believe me with my kitty every purchase is either a pan or a waste.
