I have not used carpets before, but I had to look because the surface of my table is grainy and it is not comfortable to write on it. I looked at many rugs and chose this one because the construction looked solid and the color was elegant. Well I'm very happy with how it turned out! I can write directly onto the mat with just a sheet of paper, and my pen strokes show no grain or clutter. My mouse also feels freer to have a desk pad than a limited space of its own, and although the pad comes rolled up, it has sat on my desk since I installed it. I used to have a much heavier (18lb) monitor that dented a few but was barely noticeable and I was able to place hot/cold drinks and food on it with ease. It's also fun that if I want to change something I can flip the mat and use a different color for a while. Liked this rug and would recommend it to others who want a simple, elegant look with no patterns or symbols. :)
