When I was a ska girl I would have loved those chunky hair clips! OK, yes, I'm old. So they're some kind of checkered plastic. They are black and cream, not white. It seems to me that the checks are all the way through the material and not printed on top which is cool. Kind of reminds me of molded clay parts. They are covered with a glossy finish. Stones don't perfectly match (for inexplicable reasons) in several areas. Honestly, I don't think anyone will notice when it's in your hair, but not giving it as a gift would do for me. Also, the spring's plastic body is glued (rather than welded) to the clip's frame and isn't flush in some places / looks like it might peel off over time. See photos. I was able to style all of my hair in it, but it was quite tight and not as secure as I would have liked. I have very long hair so short to medium length is probably not a problem.
