$1000 Down and No Regrets

With a few exceptions, this is the top of the IEMs. That's it. It comes at an astronomical price that can make you swoon even at a glance, but sometimes when you want the best you'll do whatever it takes to get it. Also, I received them in early June this year, so I've had about 6 months to form an opinion. I got the box in the mail and didn't even realize it was my headphones. I opened the box to see the original packaging. This is the largest headphone box I've ever seen. I opened it and saw a clear box with a picture of a pelican on it. I opened it up and found a microfiber cleaning cloth over the earbuds and the smaller case they carry with them. The case contains many accessories such as earplugs, auxiliary cables, airplane adapters, quarter-inch adapters and tuning filters. I ordered black and am very glad I did because they look "business-like". I take them straight away and I can tell right away that these aren't jokes. The cable is thick, with really good strain relief at the Y-splitter and connector. The metal cap on the case gives me a slightly better feeling in terms of durability. Their comfort is really good. I use the yellow foam sleeves and have had no issues with fit, sound or comfort. From walking to class after class, at home, or in any noisy environment, these things block out so much noise. Clay is expected from them for a fee of $1,000. After paying so much, expectations are hard to beat. Has he exceeded my expectations? no Did he meet my expectations? Yes, it happened in a big way. Before I start I would like to say that I listen to ALAC and Spotify files at 320 kbps and I listen through the Oppo HA-2SE. Also my opinion is based on white filters because they sound best to me. The bass is tight, powerful and has "real subwoofer performance". This is actually my favorite part about these headphones. I hear every nuance and detail in every bass note. I can't say that about everything else I've heard. Thanks to the low-pass filter, the mid-bass does not disturb the mids. The mids are pushed ahead of the bass and treble. It's a pleasure to listen to pop, country, alternative and a bit of rock. Treble is my least favorite part of the sound. It's detailed and clear, but not comprehensive enough in my opinion. It has good treble reproduction, it's just not what I prefer. Some people like it, but when I'm listening to classical, soundtrack, and some rock music, I need high frequencies with lots of presence to elevate the soundstage. One aspect that stands out about the sound of these headphones is the vocals. They are invariably the best I've heard. Male and female vocals are well represented. They are natural, full and pure at the same time. I bet there are a few other headphones out there that sound better than this one, but the combination of bass, mids and vocals is just addicting. This and the Sennheiser IE800 are often compared, but in fact they are more different than similar. They are so different that it is funny that they are even compared to each other. They target different types of buyers. Here I give my recommendations. If you are active and mainly listen to music on the go, then the SE846. If you listen to music more at home or in bed, then IE800. If you listen to pop, electronic, hip-hop/rap, country and/or alternative music, the SE846. If you listen to Classical, Singer/Songwriter, Soundtrack, R&B/Soul and/or Rock then this is the IE800. In general, if you listen to any genre and only care about the sound in the headphones, then the IE800. If you're looking for a headphone that goes with everything and has a few minor quirks, then the SE846 is for you. If you want the best overall experience from all-around headphones at this price point, this is probably the best you can do. It has an appealing presentation, great build quality, top-notch sound, and accessories to complement it all. If you're thinking of getting them, take the time to think about it. You spend $1,000 on headphones. You have to be crazy to spend so much on headphones. Take your time to make a decision and enjoy the music and live life to the fullest.
