The cable for my Seagate external drive was very slightly damaged so it still worked but would shut down even when slightly bumped. If you know anything about hard drives, you know that their random, sudden, unexpected power failure is regularly BAD NEWS. I was about to return the drive, dealing with losing tons of data and having to wait weeks for a replacement, when it occurred to me that the problem might just be the cable and not the connector on the drive itself. . So for less than $7 I got this replacement cable and boom - problem solved! Since then not a single accidental shutdown. And it's longer than what my drive came with, making it a lot easier to find a suitable place for the drive than right on my PC.
