I've been playing Pokemon since it first came out (my favorites are still between OR/AS and X/Y), and Pokemon Moon lags behind its predecessors in the same way. This gives you new territory to explore and yesterday's gyms are a thing of the past. Pokemon Moon introduces you to the challenges that exist on each island. You have a good story and an antagonist that you like to hate and in terms of Team Rocket Moon/Sun you have Team Skull which is probably the best part of the game. The Skull of a Good Team: If you've ever seen One Punch Man (if you haven't, shame on you I highly recommend it. You're missing out on something absolutely amazing) then I could link Team Skull to the Paradiseers. A gang of punks (punks because they're punks, but also because they're punks. Like music and lifestyle), a gang that doesn't want to work, they just want to fight back, fight Pokemon and have a good time. . I, the Guzma boy, am undoubtedly the best part of moon/sun. Legendary: So the game's flagship characters are Lunala and Solgaleo, exclusive to Luna and Sun, respectively. They have a really cool history about being Legendary Pokemon, but they're dwarfed (in my opinion) by Tapus and Ultra Beasts. The Tapu guard every island you visit throughout the game and accept you as a trainer worth capturing after you win the Alola League. (Yes, there is a Pokémon league, although it doesn't have gyms. We'll talk about that when I talk about the story). Ultra beasts are indeed the harbingers of the destruction that takes place in the story because of your main antagonist. They look cool but they have a sense of urgency that is well explained in the story that you MUST either catch them or defeat them (and who as Pokemon isn't going to catch some crazy new Pokemon?) Story: Short The synopsis is not particularly spoiled. You and your mother are moving from Kanto to Alola to start a new life. You meet Professor Kukui and Lilly, who are urging you to get your first Pokemon (these are some of the best starters we've had lately, between Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio). From there you learn that Lilly has a special Pokemon called Cosmog that has the silly name "Nebby". After getting a basic overview of Pokémon, how to play and so on, you'll travel between the four islands that make up Alola to complete your Alola challenges. Professor Kukui travels the world dreaming of starting his own Alola Pokémon League to usher in a new Pokémon era in Alola. Along the way, Lusamine, President of Aether Corporation, brings the Ultra Beasts to Alola and begins the doomsday scenario. There are some nice twists in this story that I didn't expect from Pokémon; nothing groundbreaking (à la Would You Be Nice?), but still pretty cool considering the Pokemon. Trials: The island trials are led by a captain, and after completing each trial, you complete your island trial where you battle the island of Kahuna. . It's not really your typical gym, you complete a challenge and come face-to-face with the so-called Totem Pokémon, a super-powerful Basic Pokémon. Challenges are a pretty good idea and they reinvent the Pokemon wheel, but if you get to the bottom of it, the islands themselves are just one big, long gym. So it feels new and feels familiar at the same time. Each Captain is a guy you fight before you get to the Gym Leader (Hakun). Bad Difficulty: I now know that Pokemon is technically for kids. But if you place Pokemon Red next to Pokemon Moon, for example, it will be day and night. In Pokemon Moon/Sun almost everything is served to you on a silver platter. This all looks pretty stupid. By the end of the game, it's not uncommon for you to have more than 1 million Pokédollars. - Pokemon Alola: Part of me thinks it might just be 20 year old nostalgia, but the new "Pokemon Alola" just looks silly. Part of what makes Pokemon cool is that the Pokemon themselves look cool. While you have rough form gems like Solgaleo that look damn cool, you also have Pokemon like Meowth/Persian, Exeggutor and so on that are just plain ridiculous. Endgame: yes. You still have one Pokedex to complete, but after you win the league. I caught Tapu and Ultra Beasts and wasn't tempted to come back for more. I bought Pokemon Red and went all the way including Dex. Conclusion: should I play this? Since Pokemon Ultra Moon/Ultra Sun is out, I would recommend these two over Moon/Sun. But if you're like me and haven't missed the Pokemon game, then yes. After all, it's a good game. It's by no means the best Pokémon game, but it puts a nice new, refreshing face on Pokémon, even if it feels familiar.
