Review on High-Voltage Neon Power Supply For Glass Neon Sign Lighting: Electronic Transformer For 100-240V Input Plug by Ron Mohammed

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not really sure how to rate this item

I have a neon sign that very likely had a transformer that went bad. Unfortunately the label that should have been on the original transformer was removed. I was left not knowing for certain what were the required electrical specs needed for a replacement. With some input from a neon shop I was told that I needed a 3kV transformer. This product appeared to be the exact same dimensions and construction. And indeed when I received it the only real difference that I could visually detect was that the new one had a label with the electrical specs, and of course the lead wires were brand new/unused. You can see in the picture the old one (no label) removed and laying in the foreground, with the new one (with label) installed at the top portion of the sign.So I set about removing the old and installing this new one. Everything fit exactly as the old. But when I flipped the switch to On the neon lit briefly and then immediately went off. Flipping to Off and then On resulted in the same behavior.I did some research. One issue mentioned is that there could be something wrong with a segment of the neon; the apparent course of action to diagnose is to look for any dimness or flickering during the brief episode of lighting. Everything appeared to me to light fully, even when I waited until dark when a faulty section would be more obvious. Everything lit up completely bright and then nothing.Another possible issue is that the 3kV is not enough. I could try finding and purchasing another transformer to try, potentially still not fixing the problem. I might try some further testing, such as checking to see if the transformer will light up one, two or three of the four total sections. If I can light two or three, and it doesn't seem to matter which segments I test, then there could be a case for a stronger transformer. Other results could point me in a direction.Apparently this is a solid state transformer and likely has built-in circuit protection that shuts off the current when electrical conditions are not within acceptable limits. Maybe that is what is happening, but who can say that perhaps the circuitry is not performing as it should, shutting down because it is finding fault with even the intended ideal conditions; so, perhaps a manufacturing defect? So at this point, with no sure faulty party here, I am giving three stars. If I do testing, or even just take it to be looked at by someone who has real neon experience and even testing equipment, I will report further and update my rating accordingly.A final and probably last option would be to sell the entire neon sign cheap to someone who doesn't mind that it doesn't work at this point. In that case, or if I do nothing but hang it up as-is, the 3-star rating will stand.

Pros
  • Great product
Cons
  • While the neon power supply is designed to be safe and easy to use, it still poses potential safety concerns if not handled properly. Customers need to exercise caution when setting it up, and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully
