Review on VOLT Connectors Soldering Connector Terminals by Nathan Akers

Good but not great

I bought this set of connectors to convert a marine wiring harness. I normally use Ancor marine products but given the large number of cables I needed to connect I decided to try something else as Ancor would be significantly more expensive. By the way, I consider Ancor the standard of the naval fleet - it is designed for heavy loads, never fails and is easy to use. Pay attention to other reviews. If you simply apply a heat gun to the butt connector while aiming at the solder, the plastic will shrink and soften before the solder has melted, potentially exposing the wires. So I tried the low heat setting, but about the same result. So I covered the ends of the butt connector with foil, leaving only part of the solder exposed. This improved the results. The plastic was still very soft and sticky, but the wires weren't exposed. Second, the shrink plastic is much thinner than Anchor. For very humid environments or hidden cables, I recommend a second layer of heat shrink tubing over the connector. Third, due to the design of the product, your wires cannot move during the heat-up period. Because there is no crimp to hold the wires, the wires slip out very easily. Even with a flat work surface, I figured it was best to create a small clamp to hold everything (and the foil) to prevent it from rolling. Bottom line: if you take your time and learn how to use these connectors properly, they're good, but not great. Let's see how the connectors hold up in the marine environment.
