The portable sound machine (let's call it PSM) has an excellent range of sounds, from fans to pure hissing and nature sounds like rain, sea and birds. I've been using pink noise for decades and was hoping this "non-cyclic" noise source would work all night without hitting my brain with recognizable patterns. Unfortunately, the noise tone (or noise generation algorithm) repeats itself about every 12 seconds and manifests itself as a few specific frequencies that are regularly emphasized. Instead of falling asleep, I listened to the next point in the cycle. So the noise generator is out of order. However, while fiddling around with the PSM, I've encountered simulated (recorded?) fan noise that doesn't get stuck in my ear. And it's damn close to pink noise. Close enough to effectively mask all external noise. Bottom line: I would buy it again in a heartbeat and turn on one of the fan modes.
