Soft beige seaweed which I believe is the natural color of dried herbs. The ends of the grass are woven into the rest of the fabric to keep them from falling out. This way it is clear that these are handmade boxes and not something that has just come off the machine. The strong metal frame keeps the boxes in shape while the seaweed gives them the softness they possess. I like having lids. I have a few tools handy for common, almost everyday tasks. It's convenient for me, but it drives my wife a little crazy. These closed boxes keep my regularly needed tools close at hand, but the box looks beautiful with the lid closed. Now we are both happy. The boxes are made in a way I think will last a very long time. They come with a card saying they should be protected from moisture to keep the algae from going moldy.
