This compact folding mirror made of steel is surprisingly handy. Many inexpensive polished steel mirrors are not perfectly flat and produce distorted reflections, but this mirror is flat enough to produce a remarkably accurate image. There is still a little distortion compared to a good glass mirror, but the reflection is good enough for close inspection. The body of the clamshell protects polished surfaces. The case is held together by magnets behind the mirrors, which is probably why some reviewers say it's difficult to open. I found it easy to pry open by inserting a fingernail into the gap and then parting the sides just a fraction of an inch until the magnetic attraction was gone. The housing adds extra weight and there is no viewing hole on either side so this probably won't be your camping mirror if you basically just want a distress signal mirror, but a general purpose mirror that can act as a signal mirror. but also good for all the other things mirrors are good for, it's a good choice. My only wish is that the two sides of the case are separable and not hinged so that I can use two mirrors to see inaccessible places (e.g. to check for ticks on the neck). I solved this problem by removing the hinge pin and the magnets still hold the halves together, so the magnetic clasp is difficult for me to open - this is a feature, not a bug.
