Review on Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen2 - πŸŽ₯ Ultimate USB 3.0 HD Video Capture Dongle Model 32060 by Rob Jimenez

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works with USBv2 on Linux, USBv3 patch required

Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen2 is good hardware. Take any device that exports HDMI and turn it into a webcam via USB. The picture quality is excellent - I keep getting compliments on the video quality. The setup utility is pretty easy to use. I originally gave this item 1 star. Why? Out of the box it didn't work on modern Linux. The configuration utility actually works on Linux, but works with Wine. More importantly, the device didn't transfer video over USB 3 on Linux. While USBv2 worked, its bandwidth was too low to support acceptable video. I contacted their tech support and provided many details about the issue. It took a few days to get an answer, but they responded with a kernel patch(!) and instructions on how to fix the problem in Ubuntu. (I use Fedora so I had to translate the instructions.) VERY impressive! I can only hope that their patch will be included in the Linux kernel and ready to use. I only deducted one star because patching the kernel to make the device work is ridiculous.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something

Works fine on Wirecast with tweaks. USB3 uses up more CPU than Firewire.
