You don't have to put anything in it.
When I saw the Natural Stone Pebbles Tray, I wanted one on the table so I could just look at it. Maybe I'll use it for something later. It's hard to beat the price, but it's also hard to know what to expect for $10. I can tell you it's well made. I ordered Brown, and the picture shows it accurately. It is smooth on top and bottom with no rough spots or sharp edges-- very touchable. I highly recommend it for its visual & tactile appeal 😉
