This review refers to the PS4 version of Thresher 7.1 (NON-ULTIMATE)! Here are some details that are not entirely clear from the product description: 1. MIC MONITORING. The headset has microphone monitoring. You press and hold the mic volume wheel for a few seconds and then it beeps and toggles mic monitoring on/off - I think it starts and you should turn it on the first time you use the headset. 2. CHAT/GAME VOLUME. There are two volume controls on the headset, one controls the overall game/headset volume and the other controls the volume of your own microphone. NO CHAT VOLUME CONTROL - You must use the PS4 UI to control chat volume. Here are my first impressions of the headset (I'll try to update when I use it): 1. COMFORT AND FIT. The headset is very comfortable. You don't adjust the size or headband by hand - it adjusts itself with a padded strap that sits under the metal part of the headband. My head is quite large and it seems to me that I have almost exhausted all possible adaptations; If you have a very large head this may not suit you. At the same time, the clamping force is low, but not too low; I could easily shake the headset off if I wanted to, but it also doesn't fall off or make any external noise with normal use.2. SOUND QUALITY AND DIRECTIONALITY - The sound quality is very clear but lacks much bass. I felt like I was hearing extra detail that I missed with my old headset (Turtle Beach 520s), but I may have missed a rumble of explosions and the like. It should be noted that the headset doesn't sound very good with virtual surround sound disabled; the existing bass seems to disappear completely and the volume also seems to be lower. The headset sounds loud enough (at least to me), but I turn the volume up almost; My old headset got a lot louder. The sound directivity seemed very good in early testing, but it's difficult for me to directly compare it to my old headset as I can only use one at a time.3. MICROPHONE - Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to fully test the mic, so I'll just say that I love the fact that the tip of the mic turns red to let you know it's muted. 4. WIRELESS SIGNAL. The radio signal was fairly stable in my first test. Sometimes the headset would beep once or twice while I was watching Netflix or playing a game (I think she was talking about losing and regaining the signal) but the audio never really dropped like my old headset sometimes did was. I was also able to walk into the kitchen without losing signal, which can be 25-30 feet away. To be clear, this headset does not have a headphone jack to use without a wireless connection. CONTROL AND INTERFACE. The controls on the headset are okay, but the overall interface leaves a lot to be desired. The volume controls have a nice feel, and I love that you can just click them to mute the sound (be it game audio or the mic), but they don't really stop when you hit the minimum or maximum volume, which I do don't like. --The headset will simply beep to let you know you've reached the minimum or maximum. In fact, the headset only really tells you something through beeps. It was only through trial and error that I was able to determine whether the mic monitoring or the virtual surround sound was on, as there is little to no difference between an "on" and an "off" beep. My old headset had voice prompts - 'mic on', 'mic off' etc which I found annoying at times but now, in hindsight, I skip them. Also, the power button is very small and difficult to find with your fingers, at least for now.6. CONSTRUCTION AND QUALITY - The headset definitely feels more solid than my old headset and has some metal parts inside; However, as others have noted, the joint where the headphone/speaker cups connect to the headband is plastic and is likely where breaks or interference may occur. The ear cups rotate 90 degrees to lay flat and every time I rotate them I worry they will break. I wish (and this is true of every headset manufacturer I've seen) that they could just use non-plastic parts (at least in the hinges or moving parts - the main sources of failure) in a $150 headset! I would happily pay $5 more for metal! SUMMARY. Overall I'm happy with the headset for now and think it's an upgrade over the Turtle Beach 520 (essentially an older version of the Turtle Beach Stealth 700). ). However, if I could find an offer on the 700s that made them cheaper than the Threshers, I might have opted to use them instead - they have active noise cancellation, independent game/chat volume control, and a jack for Headphones. be used wired.
