The foam inside is soft and easily removed for cleaning. I bought two of these for my pup. She is deaf and came to me at 6 months completely untrained. She also suffers from neurological problems. People before me tried to pry them open with pillows (thank goodness they couldn't!) but didn't get them outside. I'm told she's box trained, but she's not. She initially freaked out in her cage so I bought two so we could clean one while we cleaned the other. They are amazing. I've found it's best to hose them down and then remove the lid to let it dry. I love the fact that when she pees on it, the pee drips down and gets under her butt so she doesn't sit in her mess (she rarely has accidents now, but when she did, she didn't get stuck in it). Machine washing is a bit of a problem as they are water resistant! I think hand washing works best? I wash them off with hot water in the shower or outside depending on how dirty they are.
