These devices are battery powered, they do not have an auto power off feature, so once turned on they will remain on until the batteries are fully discharged. The range is not good at all, if you go upstairs or into another room, the sound quality drops drastically. Also, they don't always connect immediately when turned on and need to be turned off when the battery is removed in order for them to connect. So you can imagine how frustrating it is for young children just trying to use walkie talkies. I will say that the games and the messaging feature are fun and very durable.
