As a child and as an adult, I always envied the owners of naturally curly hair. I always kept strings straight so I could curl my hair for performances, so when my sister and I played violin (she) and piano (me) all over Umatilla County, Oregon, I had to sleep with wet hair wrapped in rags. old sheets torn off! I've tried perms, but usually even the best professionals couldn't help but give me more curls than curls or waves. As a mother, I soon began to understand the 'issue' of curly hair as my daughter Debbie's birth parents were black fathers. When she became a teenager, she envied girls with long straight hair and especially straight bangs! I did everything I could to show her how lucky she was to have such beautiful curls, but until she decided to wear a huge afro in high school, she hated her curls.
