Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great panel with some caveats

Overall I think this is a great panel. I've used it with a Jackery 1000 and also as a homemade solar "generator" with a 30A PWM charge controller. In full sun on a sunny afternoon and lying on top of my car I was able to get 97.5 watts. of which with a PWM charge controller. For a 120W panel, that's pretty damn good. It appears to be well made and has held up quite well in the Tennessee heat so far. While I think this panel is good value for money and I will most likely buy a second one to run in parallel, I don't feel right to give it a full 5 stars. It's definitely somewhere between a 4 and 5. If it holds up well over time I would definitely consider this product a product with at least a 4 out of 5 but probably somewhere around 4.5 stars. Here's a list of the cons (and the consequent reasons why I can't honestly call this a "5 star product"). I really hope TP-solar reads these reviews and uses this criticism to improve future iterations. First, the DC output cable needs to be a little longer. Maybe a foot or something more. While not too "thin", I would have preferred a thicker cable, especially as I've seen this panel put out nearly 7 amps. very bad quality. Especially the cable and battery terminals on the mc4. While I don't know the gauge of the cable used for these items I will say that it is VERY thin and it seems that simply plugging and unplugging the mc4 connectors can damage these wires. I would generally wish for more powerful cables. Mind you, while I agree that they offer them generously in the first place, any cable that's too flimsy and prone to damage is almost not worth it at all. As well as thin auxiliary cables, I would like them to better communicate the dimensions of the output cables so that longer or heavier cables can be easily purchased. After some homework I believe the DC output is a 5.5mm x 2.1mm plug. but i still have no confirmation from the manufacturer and i don't feel like ordering anything and "hoping that it works". Third, I think the biggest downside to this panel is the junction box. If the panel is "waterproof", find a way to make the junction box waterproof. Period. As it is now constructed, the waterproofing of the panel is meaningless. If left out in the rain, water will seep into the junction box, causing the panel to fail. The end user should not be held responsible for developing a process for impregnating a "waterproof" panel. Other panels have used some sort of waterproof coating over the junction box and hopefully future versions of this great panel will follow suit. Finally, and of course this is a minor point, the tote bag is WAY too small. I can't understand why it's so crowded. The plate is very difficult to put back in place and could be fixed by simply increasing the width by a few millimeters. It shouldn't have passed quality control like that. Still, I think this is a well built panel. Aside from the issues with my cable, it does what it was made to do. Take photons and spend watts. and it seems to work pretty well. I think the greatest compliment you can give a product is to buy it again and as I said I will order a second one. It fits both my Jackery 1000 and my DIY solar setup. It appears to be well built and I hope this panel will last for many years to come. If I were to rate it purely on solar power generation, it would be a 5 star panel in my eyes. The numbers don't lie, and I've attached a photo of my built-in power analyzer connected directly to the panel's output. If you can live with the cons listed above, I would definitely recommend this lightweight, portable, easy to set up panel at a very reasonable price. I bought this panel with my hard earned money. I am not affiliated with TP-Solar and did not receive this product for review. I bought it, tested it and wanted to share my thoughts with anyone interested. Thank you for reading!
