Review on Olympus Camedia Digital Camera Optical by Greg Mahoney

Revainrating 3 out of 5

An ultra-compact computer that has it all

The D40 is an unrivaled combination with several key features:1. Very compact - fits easily in your pocket or small purse when you go out. If the camera is too big to carry around, it's useless - you won't get any pictures unless you take your camera with you2. High resolution - 4 megapixels is enough for quality 8x10 prints. If you are not a professional photographer, it has the resolution you need.3. Runs on AA batteries - this was key as Olympus was the only ultra-compact device to use AA batteries instead of proprietary batteries. Battery life is a little shorter, but if you buy a 4 NiMH battery pack you'll always have a spare pair on hand. Brand name batteries from other cameras cost an additional $50-$75 on top of the base price if you need a replacement. And because it uses AA batteries, you can always buy new ones if you don't have spare batteries on hand or forgot to take your charger with you on vacation. Optical zoom. Digital zoom is a meaningless number - it's the same thing you can do with Photoshop after the fact. Only true optical zoom gives you zoom at the same resolution, and the D40 has it. I looked for all of these features and the D40 was the only digital one it offered. We took him on our 3 week honeymoon and the photos turned out great. A pair of NiMH is enough for about a day of fairly frequent shooting. All in all, I highly recommend this camera.
