I'm never sure what shorts will look like for a boy. They even flatter my cyclist/runner hips. The upper has a wide waistband so it doesn't cut in and is very comfortable. The band reminds me of yoga pants. My only concern is how well they will hold up when diving into the pool or playing in the waves. If I was more confident that they would stay in place I would give 5 starts. Although for $18 it's very good.
