Great little camera

My last camera was quite old - Canon SD630. I bought it a few years ago and it was great. For a camera of this size, it still takes very good pictures. But I felt like it was time for an upgrade. When I took my first shot with the SD3500, the first thing that struck me was that it reproduced colors well, even with a flash at close range. My second impression was that the photo looked a bit softer compared to my SD630, so I launched an image editor to check the quality. The SD3500 *seems* to favor color quality and sharpness. My SD630 seems to prefer sharpness over color quality. I conducted a fair test by turning off both cameras' flashes and taking a synchronized shot of the same subject from a tripod. The SD3500 produced significantly sharper images, so my fears of the lack of optics were allayed. I think if there is any softness it comes from the processing of the image and not from the optics themselves. The auto mode is really good. I'm really confident in leaving him in this mode as he seems to find his footing every time. And when the flash fires, I expect a brightened foreground and a darkened background, but I get a very color-saturated, white-balanced image. The automatic mode also works here. The video quality was good but not great. I can get pretty sharp 720p videos, but that won't surprise anyone. Zoom while recording is definitely digital, so use optical zoom before recording. All of my testing today was done in low light, which may also explain some of the lack of sharpness. Can't wait to try it in the sun. The touchscreen is reasonably responsive, although I find the scroll and pan gestures a bit slow and sluggish. Other gestures and button presses work pretty well. The UI isn't iPhone quality, but it's not bad at all. Photos and videos look really great because the screen resolution is very high and the colors are very saturated. Build quality – well, Canon always does an excellent job. The SD3500 seems a little lighter than it looks, which I like. I like the less flashy design than some of Canon's other models. Is this camera better than the SD980? I honestly don't know as my update isn't from that camera. I really know that I really like this camera. Pros: - The focus seems to be on color quality rather than sharpness. Blink detector, blink detection and everything that works really well. Image stabilization hasn't overdone it and still gives you responsiveness. Different shooting modes are interesting to play. Excellent build quality Cons: Some aspects of the touch interface could be more responsive - No optical zoom when recording videos - No high frame rate video modes - HDMI and USB doors a bit difficult to open - Mini HDMI cable not included. C'mon Canon, it's about $2 from Revain. - Well, um, the focus seems to be on color quality, not sharpness.

A good camera but the picture is not the sharpest
