I bought this to protect myself from dust mite allergy, I've already dustproofed our pillowcases and mattress but the duvet was the last thing I had to pack. I was concerned about dressing him in something that would make him less fluffy/luxurious. I washed this duvet once before buttoning the duvet. It was still a bit stiff, maybe I would wash it again. However, this is clearly very good quality (think expensive thick 100% cotton sheets). We still cover it with another duvet cover as it is very light white and I think it would be difficult to keep it that way. Really enjoyed adding this to our comforter. It added some weight and warmth to the comforter, which I ended up liking. He's still very soft. Feels like a very high quality product that will last for many years/washing. I can't speak to his specific allergy condition. I'm feeling better but it's really hard to pinpoint anything other than weather/cleansing/allergy meds. It was winter the whole time and I wanted to limit the amount of dust and pollen. But like I said, I feel better! Bonus: the guy who doesn't have allergies loves it. Other than an investment in price, there aren't any real downsides.
