The polarity stated on the strip itself is wrong
The strip has + and - pads for soldering every few inches, corresponding to the sign of the scissors for cutting. The + and - signs are reversed: the positive 12V line should go to the pad marked "-" and the negative line should go to the pad marked "+". However, the red and black wires at the ends of the strip are correctly labeled. Otherwise they work fine.
