TV ARC audio not working [updated]

Mine may have been defective but I've tried all combinations of ports and switches but I can't get the sound produced by the TV (Smart TV apps) out of the audio out. Seriously, I made a google doc to show all the combinations (just in case the ports/switches were mislabeled) and nothing worked. Unfortunately, I don't have an HDMI analyzer at home, so I have no real way of determining what's coming out of the audio output. If you're wondering why I didn't just plug the ARC connector into the receiver, it was because I needed a device to buffer the signal from the TV to the receiver to prevent it from going out of sync when there wasn't one sound can be heard. EDIT: The seller contacted me immediately to try and resolve the issue. They claim that they have an updated product that can fix the problem but it's not available yet. Instead they gave me my money back. I'm increasing my review score to reflect the level of customer service. although the product didn't work for me.
