I love Spry xylitol products. This toothpaste tastes great (like those green peppermints you find at weddings) and isn't too strong. At around $4.50 per tube, this is a more expensive toothpaste, but I love the xylitol in it and am happy to pay a little more for that added benefit. As a dentist, I recommend this product as an additional preventive measure against tooth decay. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that is not digested by most bacteria in the mouth. Consuming xylitol limits bacterial growth in the mouth, thereby reducing the amount of acid left behind by the bacteria. Less bacteria = less acid = less chance of tooth decay (cavities). However, it is important to note that you must use xylitol products properly and consistently for a period of time in order to receive the FULL anti-caries benefit of xylitol. .Recommended dose for maximum anti-caries effect: 6-10 grams per day, administered 3-5 times. One Spry mint = 0.5 grams of xylitol One stick of Spry gum = 0.72 grams of xylitol One gram of toothpaste = approximately 0.25 grams of xylitol (minimum). 25% by weight of Spry toothpaste is xylitol (approximately at least 36 grams of xylitol in a full tube (144g) of toothpaste. 36/144 = 0.25g of xylitol per 1g of toothpaste)** Most people do NOT use it a whole gram of toothpaste when brushing your teeth, 0.25 grams is considered a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. If I had to assume that most people use about 0.5-0.7 grams of toothpaste on average every time they brush their teeth, as most people tend to use more toothpaste than recommended. Recommended 6-10 grams per day. Brushing your teeth twice a day with Spry toothpaste (0.50g), eating two Spry lozenges (1g) and chewing two Spry gums (1.44g) in one day doesn't even provide 3g of xylitol (about ). This is even true for toothpaste at 1 gram per brush, which is an excessive amount of toothpaste. I am telling you this so that you know that to protect against tooth decay with this product, studies show that it is recommended to consume 6-10 grams of xylitol per day. Taking less xylitol offers some protection, but to get the FULL benefit of protection against tooth decay, you need to consume 6-10 grams per day. Consumption above this level did not bring any additional benefit in the studies carried out. In short, this is a great product that offers anti-caries benefits depending on the amount you consume/if you consume it regularly. In my opinion, additional preventive measures are better than nothing. So even if you're not consuming the recommended 6-10 grams daily, using this product is still beneficial for maintaining oral health. Just remember that there are certain guidelines to achieve maximum tooth decay prevention results when using xylitol! *** Each preventive measure works in conjunction with other preventive measures to maintain optimal dental health. It's important that you do your part: brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day, floss daily and see your dentist regularly to prevent tooth decay!***
